Students from Lipsi High School temporarily set aside their studies to take the stage in Athens, achieving remarkable success. This initiative, spearheaded by Symplefsi AMKE, transformed their journey into more than just a school trip; it provided a unique opportunity for their creativity to extend far beyond their island home.
Theatrical Group’s Athenian Journey
The school’s theatrical group presented three performances at various schools in Athens and held an additional show as part of a Symplefsi event, attended by friends and supporters of the organization. Under the guidance of philologist and theatre director Yiannis Fasoulas, the students showcased a play they had diligently prepared for months in Lipsi. For many of these young performers, it was their first time on such a large stage, in front of such a numerous audience, and they excelled in a unique way.
Both in school halls and at the Symplefsi event, the students experienced the thrill of performing and felt that their hard work could reach far beyond their small island. For the children themselves, it was a memorable life experience, and for Symplefsi, it marked another step towards its vision of empowering children from remote islands to spread their wings.
Educator’s Perspective on the Experience
The supervising educator of the group stated: “For the children, it was a life-changing experience. They stepped out of their comfort zone, saw that their work had an impact, and felt that their voice could reach everywhere.”
This initiative was part of Symplefsi’s broader mission to support remote islands, not only through its missions but also by offering equal access to culture, education, and enriching experiences.
Symplefsi’s Vision for Island Youth
Symplefsi emphasized: “Empowering the children of remote islands is as important to us as medical examinations, infrastructure projects, and cultural activities. We want to open doors for young people, giving them space to dream and create.”
The Athens performances were made possible through the generous support of private individuals and companies, who helped the Lipsi students travel to the capital and share their work with a wider audience.
